If I haven't been blogging for a few days, it's because things are going exceptionally well with my contracting business. When I threw open my gates for regular service a few weeks ago, I had no idea I was going to be as busy as I have been.
I'm very fortunate to be living in Vancouver right now, where there's a steady stream of new startup and break-away video game companies. These typically smaller businesses are more likely to contract out for concept design or graphic design, because these skills are not always necessary for the duration of a project. With fewer projects to juggle employees between, it makes perfect sense.
I'm also very fortunate to have got into the industry when I did. The connections and knowledge I've acquired have always proved invaluable, and even more obviously so right now. I'm really enjoying the diversity of skills demanded of me, and also the ability to work with a whole new set of people with every new project.
Besides games, Vancouver is also a hotbed for film and television, and branching into that area seems increasingly likely for me. I've only had a limited foray into that field, but I'm very excited about doing more!
In any case, with my contracts and other money generating schemes in my downtime (maybe one day I'll tell you about them) I don't see me running out of things to do for ages. Hurrah!
